Chinese collector buys 1727 Stradivarius violin
In association with the Hong Kong-based China Guardian Auctions Co., Rare Violins of New York completed the first sale of a Stradivari violin to a private individual on the Chinese mainland. Completed on December 11 2014, this 1727 violin known as the ‘General Dupont’,’Grumiaux’ Stradivari, was sold to an anonymous collector in China for an undisclosed sum. The instrument was once part of the Rare Violins of New York collection, previously owned by a businessman and philanthropist based in Cleveland, Ohio, and for several years on loan to US violinist Jennifer Koh. The recent Chinese buyer is an entrepreneur, art collector and amateur violinist who plans to loan the instrument to a Chinese violinist. In the future, he intends to create a foundation to provide instruments to musicians.
